John's Story

As a child, John first drew attention because he was strikingly beautiful. He gave no clue, from his physical appearance, that he embodied the mystery called autism. With a burst of energy and for no apparent reason, John will suddenly bolt, arms flapping, laughing loudly, only to return in a moment with a mischievous smile, enjoying the knowledge that he had startled you.

Lifelong, John has been startling family, friends, group home staff, teachers, and strangers alike with his classic autistic mannerisms, his rhythmic rocking movements, his need to predict with certainty his daily, weekly, monthly and annual routines. No less enigmatic are his reading, spelling and arithmetic abilities, which were precousiously displayed in early childhood.

John is now a 6 foot tall, 37 year old, handsome adult, as mysterious as ever. He lives in a warm active group home in Billerica and visits his family on a regular basis. He is engaged daily in a specially individualized vocational/recreation program near his home.

He balances his obsessive need for structure with a cautious openness to a variety of spontaneous or planned activities. He enjoys meeting new people and exploring new things. He likes music, walking along the beach, feeding birds in the park, bowling, swimming, eating in restaurants and visiting with relatives and old friends.

PALS Inc. is helping plan for his future by building an enduring Personal Support Network. John still bolts occasionally, but he responds warmly to people. If you are fascinated by magical qualities and intrigued by mysteries, if you like ice cream sundae’s and riding on roller coasters, get in touch with us.

Perhaps you too will have the extraordinary opportunity of exploring the mystery and the magic that is John Larkin.
